Allied Aviator’s Escape Maps

SKU: MR200
Qty in Stock: 1

Rare! Original silk escape maps issued to American and British airmen from WWII until the dawn of the Cold war. Prepared at the direction of the Commanding General, Army Air Forces for the Aeronautical Chart Service by the Lake Survey Branch, Army Map Service in 1942, and revised through 1945. Highly detailed, they provided information on political and geographic boundaries, local language, natural obstructions, concealment, and targets of opportunity. The specially developed color printing process insured that it didn’t bleed even when wet. So critical were these maps to a downed pilot’s survival that they were often sewn into an airman’s clothing to avoid detection. 33” x 31” nominally
