Gypsy Dancer by Stanley Meltzoff - Giclée Print

Stanley Meltzoff died in 2006 at the age of 89.  His credits are far too extensive to list.  Born in New York City, he served in Italy in World War II as an artist and journalist for the U.S. military magazine Stars and Stripes. He also created visuals for Puptent Poets, a paperback of soldiers' verse. A teacher and an illustrator for the nation's most wide-read periodicals and dozens of paperback novels, he was perhaps best known for his marine portraits.  Stanley Meltzoff's works are pure Americana and some of his works hang in The National Gallery and the Getty Museum.

Gypsy Dancer has always been a personal favorite.  I imagine that she is dancing to one of Brahms's Hungarian Dances and, practicing for an imminent performance.    They were in large part inspired by Brahms's introduction to tavern style Romani or "gypsy" music, firsthand, by Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi. Gypsy Dancer appeared as the cover image of The Atlantic magazine, September 1954.
